Hoops World Sun, 02/22/2009 11:26 PMIf You'll Take Curry: With less than 30 hours to the NBA trade deadline things are starting to settle in, that doesn't mean there are not last minute deals being offered. The Portland Trail Blazers seem to be counting on the last minute appeal of the ending $12 million contract of Raef LaFrentz as they have made secondary passes at both the Sacramento Kings and the New York Knicks. The interest in Kings' swingman John Salmons seems to still be on the table for Portland as does interest in Knicks' forward David Lee. According to Marc Berman of the New York Post the Knicks are telling teams expressing interest in Lee that a willingness to take back Knicks' center Eddy Curry would go along way towards opening a real dialogue. This is a departure from the "no deal" stance the Knicks had regarding Lee several weeks ago. Its unlikely a deal with the Knicks gets consummated with so little time remaining before the deadline, but the Blazers do have the assets to consider such a deal, especially if their interest in David Lee is as genuine as reports seem to indicate. Portland GM Kevin Pritchard has told HOOPSWORLD several times this year he is reluctant to mess with his team's chemistry and any move involving both Curry and David Lee would surely involve a core player leaving Portland. The Kings on the other hand might be more inclined to take on the cast off pieces Portland does not want, especially if it includes draft picks and younger players.

The Kings are rumored to have had some conversations that would send John Salmons to Portland in a deal that will likely return Raef LaFrentz and a future draft pick, according to sources close to the discussions. It's possible the Kings could send Mikki Moore in the deal, although the Kings would surely want to include Kenny Thomas. The additional players needed for the deal to work under the cap could not be confirmed by either side. The Blazers have been shopping out the ending $12 million contract of Raef LaFrentz that is now covered by insurance, making Raef an absolutely free player that clears a ton of cap space in July. The Kings are still evaluating their options, and the LaFrentz deal is said to be one of several that they are looking at before the deadline. King's GM Geoff Petrie told reporters that he was looking at a lot of options and was trying to keep an open mind, hinting that nothing has been decided yet.
